The Direct Support Professional (DSP) for The Arc of the Piedmont is responsible for the implementation of person-centered plans through teaching and assisting the people we support in a community based residential setting, or in one of our Adult Activity Program settings. DSP’s maintain required documentation and reporting, assist with personal care as needed, foster a warm and caring home environment and initiate in-home and community based recreation activities. A high school diploma or equivalent is required and, as always, we seek creative innovative individuals with an eye towards providing the greatest quality of life possible for the people we support.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Implements the Individual Service/Program Plans by effectively teaching and supporting individuals as outlined in the plan. Applies positive, non-aversive approaches (i.e. Safety-Care, Positive Behavior Supports) to providing support.
  • Observes individual participation and progress in meeting Individual Service or Program Plan’s goals and objectives. Assists the Day Support Manager in the development and/or revision of Plans to better meet each individual’s needs.
  • Assures a caring, stimulating program environment. Initiates projects that create a supportive program environment, involving individuals in this process to the furthest extent possible for each individual. Provides recommendations to the Day Support Manager for program changes.
  • Maintains daily, weekly and other regularly scheduled documentation and reports regarding individual activities, programs and their progress. Maintains required documentation within specified timeframes. Uses professional, person-centered language in the completion of all documentation.
  • Assists individuals with medication administration to assure accuracy. Monitors clients to assess medication effectiveness, side effects and reports observations to Day Support Manager for follow up. Notes and reports errors in medication administration.
  • Plans and initiates a variety of on-site and community-based recreation activities, which incorporate individual preferences and skills as well as concepts of self- direction, interpersonal competence, and community engagement.
  • Assures the safety of individuals and makes reasonable efforts to protect individuals from harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Immediately reports any concerns or observations of potential harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Utilizes necessary equipment to assure the safe transfer of clients, as well as protects oneself from personal injury (i.e. training and use of the Hoyer Lifts.)
  • Assures the program facility is safe and secure. Immediately reports any safety concerns identified and takes action to address any concerns. Utilizes and contacts emergency services including local law enforcement as needed.
  • Provides safe transportation to clients when necessary for daily commuting, employment, healthcare needs, and functions of community life.
  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled Attends other trainings and meetings as required to maintain knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Provides residential day support to homebound Adult Activity Center participants when the Adult Activity Center is closed or delayed due to inclement weather.
  • May involve, as required, personal care which may include some or all of the following: toileting, changing briefs, bathing and feeding.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: developmental disabilities; concepts and principles of barrier-free environments, person-centered principles, self-direction, interpersonal competence, community resources, health and safety needs, independent living needs of persons with disabilities

Skills: safe operation of passenger vehicles as evidenced by a valid Virginia driving license and acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, CPR/First Aid procedures, crisis prevention, positive behavioral supports, intervention and emergency responses, documentation

Abilities: to lift and transfer at least 50 pounds and, for transfers of the people we support, utilize appropriate equipment (i.e. Hoyer Lift) to prevent personal injury or injury to the client, work independently; follow directions; communicate verbally and in writing, interact effectively and courteously with a variety of people, teach effectively, provide personal assistance

The Arc provides paid training such as Medication Administration, CPR and First Aid, all of which are required for employment. We are always interested in hearing from candidates interested in direct support work.

Senior Direct Support Professional, Community-Based Supports – Day Support, Cville

The Day Support Senior Direct Support Professional-Community-Based Supports (Senior DSP) is responsible for the implementation of the Individual Support Plans (ISPs.) This entails skill building and support to assure each individual’s independence, personal autonomy, access to community resources and personal choice while at community or at the center.  The Day Support Senior DSP-Community-Based Supports is also responsible for creating a safe, nurturing environment at the activity center.

This person also works very closely with the Day Support Manager to ensure that the day-to-day needs and duties are met to ensure that the safety and welfare of the individuals we support are maintained at the very highest level.

This is a non-exempt hourly rate position. The incumbent reports to the Day Support Program Manager.

  • Location: Charlottesville, VA
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week. Mon-Fri 8:30a-4:30p
  • $17-$19/hour

DSP JOB DUTIES:

  3. Assures a caring, supportive environment while initiating projects by including individuals in all day support community activities to the furthest extent possible.  Provides recommendations to the Program Manager for program changes.
  4. Maintains daily and other regularly scheduled documentation and reports regarding activities, programs and progress.  Maintains documentation as required and within required timeframes.  Uses professional person-centered language in the completion of all documentation.
  5. Plans day support community-based recreation activities that incorporate individual preference, skills, financial resources as well as concepts of personal choice, autonomy, and community integration.
  6. Assures the safety of individuals and makes reasonable efforts to protect individuals from harm, abuse, and exploitation.  Immediately reports any concerns or observations of potential harm, abuse, or exploitation.
  7. Understands and demonstrates competency; assures the rights of individuals in accordance with DBHDS Office of Human Rights to include protecting individuals from harm, abuse, and exploitation. Immediately reports any concerns or observations of potential harm, abuse, or exploitation.
  8. Assures and promotes the rights of individuals in accordance with HCBS (Home and Community Based Services) to include integration and full access to the community, individual rights of privacy, dignity, respect, and freedom from coercion and restraint, individual autonomy, and independence in making life choices and facilitates individual choice in services and supports.
  9. Maintains the program site in accordance with DBHDS licensing regulations, which includes routine cleaning and other duties as assigned by the Day Support Program Manager.
  10. Assures the program facility, and vehicle are safe and secure, reports immediately any safety concerns identified and takes action to address or protect individuals including contacting emergency services or police as needed.
  11. Provides transportation to individuals when necessary for daily commuting, healthcare needs, and community activities.
  12. Utilizes necessary equipment to assure the safe transfer of the individuals we support as well as protecting oneself from personal injury (i.e. training and use of the Hoyer Lifts).
  13. Attends at least one staff meeting per month; attends other training and meetings as required to maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  14. Provides residential day support to homebound Adult Activity Center participants when the Adult Activity Center is closed or delayed due to inclement weather.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

SENIOR DSP JOB DUTIES:       

  1. Coordinate with Program Manager to organize daily activities. Establishes and coordinates rotation of community-based activities and to a limited extent center-based as needed.
  2. Coordinate grocery/supply shopping.
  3. Assists individuals with medication administration while assuring its accuracy. Reviews Medication Administration Records (MARs) and Physician’s Orders on a weekly basis for accuracy.  Inventories individuals’ medications monthly.
  4. Works and coordinates with Medicaid transportation providers to ensure that all transportation needs of the individuals are met.
  5. Ensure that Safety checklist, Vehicle checklist review are scheduled and conducted monthly. Ensures all paperwork is completed and/or copied/filed; supplies are purchased, and forms are submitted as appropriate.
  6. Work with Program Manager to ensure petty cash receipts are reviewed, reconciled, and copied/submitted in a timely manner.
  7. Manages staff cleaning schedule while also ensuring that the center site is clean daily.
  8. Assist Program Manager and Staff Development Coordinator in planning & organizing required staff training.
  9. Specific duties as determined.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:  Intellectual and developmental disabilities; concepts and principles of barrier-free environments, person-centered principles, community integration.

Skills:   Safe operation of passenger vehicles as evidenced by a valid Virginia driving license and an acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, CPR/First Aid certification, crisis prevention and intervention, emergency responses, documentation requirements, Therap, activity development and planning.

Residential Manager – Charlottesville

The Residential Manager assures the operations of their assigned service site(s), including facilitating and implementing day-to-day services, activities, and programs for the individuals receiving services. The Residential Manager provides first line supervision of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to model/coach respectful and effective interactions and ensure consistent implementation of the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) for each individual.

An ISP must be completed at least annually or more often as the needs and desires of an individual changes. The Residential Manager will work closely with the individual’s Case Manager to coordinate the planning meeting, help assure all key people involved have input, and document the planning session. The Residential Manager assures that all regulatory and agency requirements are met.

This is a full time exempt position. The incumbent reports to the Director of Residential Services. In carrying out position duties, he/she performs in accordance with professional ethics and established policies. The incumbent is expected to function with substantial initiative and good judgment while utilizing the management team for regular input and feedback.

JOB DUTIES:

Day-to-Day Oversight:

  • Provides direct supervision to assigned residential site(s) and direct support staff.
  • Participates in the interviewing of candidates and makes recommendations on hiring. Works with Staff Development Coordinator to ensure training of new hires and completion of New Hire On-Site Orientation Checklist.
  • Prepares for and leads monthly staff meetings for assigned residential sites.
  • Oversees schedules and work distribution; regulates workflow to provide timely and coordinated services; provides for emergency coverage for assigned sites.
  • Reviews the medication administration records (MAR) weekly to ensure accuracy and maintenance of medications for individuals receiving services. Ensures that the MAR is accurately prepared and ready for timely implementation. Coordinates medical appointments and purchasing of prescribed medication, OTC medication, and durable medical equipment as ordered by physicians.
  • Oversees and coordinates agency, public, and other transportation to address each individual’s needs; may be required to provide transportation.
  • Communicate with day activity center(s) as appropriate to ensure continuity of supports.
  • Reviews and updates records regularly and as needed to ensure accuracy.

Financial:

  • Oversees site budget; Purchases groceries and supplies for assigned residential home; Completes monthly financial reports (i.e. checking reports, house petty cash, etc.); Completes financial reviews and reports for all individuals receiving services within assigned residential home.
  • Manages household operations to include home maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and office equipment. Requests and follows up with site and vehicle maintenance issues. Ensures that regular safety checks are completed.

Staff Training and Support:

  • Reviews and approves time records and PTO requests.
  • Provides on-call assistance to assure appropriate handling of emergencies, which may of course include days, evenings, and weekends. May be required to provide direct supports/cover shifts in the absence of support staff. Will work in conjunction with another Residential Manager to ensure on-call supports during time off. Participates in weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
  • Writes probationary and annual performance evaluations for all assigned residential staff. Conducts in-service education and training as required and appropriate.

Documentation:

  • Facilitates the person-centered planning process for individuals receiving residential services.
  • Develops ISPs that incorporates person-centered thinking practices and addresses the long-term goals in accordance with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), and agency regulations for each individual receiving services. Ensures that the ISP is updated at least annually or more often, as needs dictateCompletes a written review of ISPs at least quarterly.
  • Provides training to direct support staff to ensure knowledge and accurate implementation of ISPs.
  • Reviews documentation on a weekly basis to ensure implementation of services and completes/submits weekly billing reports.
  • Responsible for obtaining materials for Local Human Rights Committee annual/intermittent review of restraints.

Other:

  • Participates in agency committees and relevant training as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of intellectual and developmental disability delivery systems including Medicaid Waiver, principles of person-centered planning and community engagement/inclusion, family support, behavioral support strategies, service coordination, group process, service promotion, public relations, social services systems, and agencies working with individuals with disabilities; thorough working knowledge of regulations required of community residential services.
