GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Staff Development Coordinator is responsible for identifying, coordinating, and providing the staff training and development necessary to provide the highest quality person-centered services possible.  They will ensure that the agency is in compliance as it pertains to the timely and satisfactory completion of all trainings required by licensing/regulatory agencies. The Staff Development Coordinator will also support Human Resources to ensure thorough administration of HR functions and documentation, record keeping, monitoring, and follow up.

This is an Exempt, full-time position reporting to the Deputy Executive Director of Operations.  In carrying out position duties, they will perform in accordance with professional ethics and established policies.  This incumbent is expected to function with substantial initiative, independence, and good judgment.

 

 JOB DUTIES:

Staff Training and Development

  1. Develop and continually refine an initial and on-going training plan for all newly hired direct support staff as well as existing direct support and administration staff.
  2. Conduct- in conjunction with fellow staff- new hire orientations on a biweekly schedule and as needed.
  3. Coordinate and schedule new employee onsite training at the program sites.
  4. Maintain the Therap Training Management System (TMS) to monitor mandated training schedule and enter into TMS the data of those who have completed.
  5. Schedule, conduct, and/or administer required training (i.e. CPR, First Aid, Medication Administration, Med Refresher, Human Rights, HCBS, and Positive Behavior Supports, etc.) as required for staff certification or re-certification.
  6. Monitor/track 30 Day Follow Up for newly hired direct support staff to assess training progress and needs while coordinating the delivery of as indicated.
  7. Coordinate with the Director of Residential Services as well as the Deputy Executive Director of Supports to determine which additional training and support may be required and/or of value.
  8. Coordinate with Program Directors to seek out and provide staff trainings and tutorials to reduce workplace safety concerns, ensure best practices, and reduce overall safety/injury incidence as needed.
  9. With Senior Management, solicit and review all training opportunities that arrive from staff and/or outside resources to determine organizational benefit.

Human Resources Support

  1. Track and report the timely completion of Performance Evaluations (PEs) and input that data into the Therap system.
  2. Assist Managers/Directors in the preparation of probationary evaluations by reporting on the progress of the completion of training requirements.
  3. Maintain up-to-date staff personnel files.
  4. Assist in performing administrative functions of the background checking process, which entails the timely submission of forms/prints to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) as well as with the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS).
  5. Other job related duties as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director of Operations and/or the Executive Director, which would include assisting in the recruitment process (i.e. screening, reference checking, and interviews, as needed.)

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:  Human resources practices and procedures ideally focused towards staff development and training; Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services (DBHDS) licensing and the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) regulations for providing services to individuals with intellectual disabilities and Medicaid Waiver programs- especially those that pertain to the required training of direct service delivery staff; a firm understanding of the agency mission, best practices, and the needs of the individuals to determine best resources and staff development opportunities.

Skills:   Strong organizational skills; developmental skills; efficient and effective monitoring of training curriculums and programs; good oral and written communication skills; solid proficiency with computers.

Ability:  To interact well with staff as well as outside agencies and resources; seek out and develop productive relationships with community resources.

 

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree plus at least one year of experience.

 

SCHEDULE:

40 hours per week with the possibility of working a flexible schedule with night and weekend hours as required by trainings being coordinated.

SALARY: $45,000-$55,000

Direct Support Professional – Charlottesville (Shamrock program), Full-time, 36 hours

The Community Living Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for the implementation of the Individual Support Plans through skill building and support to assure each individual’s independence, personal autonomy, and access to community resources.  The Community Living DSP is also responsible for creating a safe, nurturing home environment for individuals living in residential programs.

This is a non-exempt position, which can be part time or full time.  The incumbent reports to the Community Living Program Manager and may receive oversight in day-to-day work from the Senior Direct Support Professional.

  • Charlottesville (Shamrock program) Full-time, 36 hours per week, Fri/Sat/Sun 8a-8p
  • $16-$18/hour

JOB DUTIES:

  • Implements the Individual Support Plans by effectively supporting individuals in building skills, health and safety and community engagement as outlined in each plan.  Applies positive, non-aversive approaches to providing support.
  • Observes individual participation and progress in achieving outcomes.  Assists the individual and Residential Manager in the person-centered development and/or revision of ISPs to better meet individual’s needs, preferences, and goals.
  • Assures a caring, supportive home environment in all day-to-day home activities to the furthest extent possible for each individual.
  • Maintains daily and other regularly scheduled documentation and reports regarding individual activities, programs, and their progress.  Maintains and completes documentation as required and within required timeframes.  Uses professional, person-centered language in the completion of all documentation.
  • Assists individuals with medication administration while assuring accuracy.  Monitors individuals to assess medication effectiveness and side effects; and reports observations to Residential Manager for follow up.  Notes and reports errors in medication administration.
  • May involve, as required, personal care that may include toileting, changing briefs, bathing, and feeding.
  • Supports individuals to plan and initiate a variety of in-home and community-based recreational activities that incorporate individual preferences, skills, financial resources as well as concepts self-determination, community integration.
  • Understands, demonstrates competency, and assures the rights of individuals in accordance with DBHDS Office of Human Rights to include protecting individuals from harm, abuse, and exploitation. Immediately reports any concerns or observations of potential harm, abuse, or exploitation.
  • Assures and promotes the rights of individuals in accordance with HCBS (Home and Community Based Services) to include integration and full access to the community, individual rights of privacy, dignity, respect, and freedom from coercion and restraint, individual autonomy, and independence in making life choices and facilitates individual choice in services and supports.
  • Maintains the home in accordance to DBHDS Licensing regulations, which includes routine cleaning and general home maintenance and other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
  • Responds to medical or behavioral health emergencies safely, swiftly, and appropriately.
  • Assures the home is safe and secure, reports immediately any identified safety concerns and takes action to address and/or protect the program individuals including contacting emergency services and/or police as needed.
  • Provides transportation to individuals for daily commuting, healthcare needs, and community activities as requested.
  • Utilizes necessary equipment to assure the safe transfer of the individuals, as well as protecting oneself from personal injury (i.e., training and use of the Hoyer Lifts.)
  • Attends at least one staff meeting per month; attends other required trainings and meetings to maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:  intellectual and developmental disabilities, concepts and principles of barrier-free environments, person-centered principles, community integration, independent living needs of individuals with disabilities.

Skills:   Safe operation of passenger vehicles as evidenced by a valid Virginia driving license and an acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, CPR/First Aid procedures, crisis prevention and intervention and emergency responses, documentation.

Ability:  to lift and transfer at least 50 pounds and, for transfers of the individuals we support, utilizes appropriate equipment (i.e. Hoyer Lift) to prevent personal injury, or injury to the individual being supported. Must work independently; follow directions; communicate verbally and in writing; interact effectively and courteously with a variety of individuals; teach effectively; and provide personal assistance.

 

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED) or any combination of training and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Successful completion of The Arc of the Piedmont’s staff certification program.

Relief positions are also available, working on an as needed basis.
