GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Day Support Senior Direct Support Professional (Senior DSP) is responsible for the implementation of the Individual Service or Program Plans through teaching and assisting to assure that each person we support has the greatest possible independence.  The Day Support Senior DSP is also responsible for creating a safe, nurturing environment at the activity center.

This person also works very closely with the Day Support Manager to ensure that the day-to-day needs of their assigned service site are met.  This includes the day-to-day duties that ensure that the safety and welfare of the people we support are maintained to the very highest level.

This is a 40 hour per week non-exempt hourly rate position, with a pay range of $15-$17 an hour.  The incumbent reports to the Day Support Program Manager.

The schedule for this position is Monday- Friday, 9a – 5p.

DSP JOB DUTIES:

  1. Implements the Individual Service or Program Plans by effectively teaching and assisting clients as outlined in each plan.  Applies positive, non-aversive approaches to providing support.
  2. Observes participation and progress in meeting Individual Service goals and objectives.  Assists the Service Plan Coordinator in the development and/or revision of Plans to better meet the individual’s needs.
  3. Assures a caring, supportive environment, initiating projects and involving individuals in all day support activities to the furthest extent possible for each individual.  Provides recommendations to the Program Manager for program changes.
  4. Maintains daily and other regularly scheduled documentation and reports regarding activities, programs and progress.  Maintains documentation as required and within required timeframes.  Uses professional person centered language in the completion of all documentation.
  5. With team input, plans center-based and community based recreation activities that incorporate individual preference, skills, financial resources as well as concepts of normalization and community participation.  Involves individuals in the identification and implementation of recreation activities.
  6. Assures the safety of individuals and makes reasonable efforts to protect individuals from harm, abuse and exploitation.  Immediately reports any concerns or observations of potential harm, abuse or exploitation.
  7. Maintains the program site, cleaning as needed and on a regular basis as assigned by the Program Manager.
  8. Assures the program facility is safe and secure, reports immediately any safety concerns identified and takes action to address or protect individuals including contacting ER services or police as needed.
  9. Transports individuals when necessary for daily commuting, healthcare needs and community activities.
  10. Utilizes necessary equipment to assure the safe transfer of the people we support, as well as protecting ones self from personal injury (i.e. training and use of the Hoyer Lifts.)
  11. Attends at least one staff meeting per month; attends other trainings and meetings as required to maintain knowledge, skills and abilities.
  12. Provides residential day support to homebound Adult Activity Center participants when the Adult Activity Center is closed or delayed due to inclement weather.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

SENIOR DSP JOB DUTIES:

  1. Coordinate with Program Manager and Service Plan Coordinator to organize daily activities. Establishes and coordinates rotation of center-based, community-based and prevocational program activities.
  2. Coordinate grocery/supply shopping.
  3. Assists individuals with medication administration, assuring accuracy. Reviews Medication Administration Records and Physician’s Orders weekly for accuracy.  Inventories medications monthly.
  4. Maintain oversight of prescriptions to ensure that all refills are obtained and on-site in a timely manner. Also makes sure the MAR is updated, and all needed documentation is present.
  5. Work with Logisticare to ensure that all transportation needs are coordinated.
  6. Ensure that monthly Fire Drills, Safety checklist, Vehicle checklist review are scheduled and conducted. Make sure paperwork is completed, copied/filed, supplies are purchase and forms submitted as appropriate.
  7. Work with supervisor to ensure Petty Cash Receipts are reviewed, reconciled and copied/submitted in a timely manner.
  8. Manages staff cleaning schedule and ensures that the site is clean after each shift.
  9. Assist with filing as needed.
  10. Assist Program Manager/Service Plan Coordinator in planning & organizing staff trainings.
  11. Specific duties as determined.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:  intellectual and developmental disabilities; concepts and principles of barrier-free environments, person centered principles, normalization, prevocational training.

Skills:   Safe operation of passenger vehicles as evidenced by a valid Virginia driving license and acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, CPR/First Aid certification, crisis prevention and intervention and emergency responses, documentation requirements, Therap, activity development and planning.

Ability:  to lift and transfer at least 50 pounds and, for transfers of the people we support, utilizes appropriate equipment (i.e. Hoyer Lift) to prevent personal injury, or injury to the person being supported. Must work independently; follow directions; communicate verbally and in writing; interact effectively and courteously with a variety of people and teach effectively.

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and any combination of training and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Successful completion of The Arc of the Piedmont’s staff certification program to include CPR, First Aid, and 32- hour Medication Administration
